Who Is Adam Levine?

Adam Levine is the Grammy-winning lead singer of the band Maroon 5, whose accomplishments include many number-one singles and platinum and gold albums. In 2011, he became a judge and coach on the reality singing competition The Voice. Overexposed, Maroon 5's fourth studio album, was released the following year and featured the singles "One More Night" and "Payphone." In 2014, Levine and his bandmates published the album V, which had the songs "Maps" and "Animals. Three years later, in 2017, they released Red Pill Blues, which included the singles "What Lovers Do," "Wait," and "Girls Like You."

Early Life and First Band

Adam Noah Levine was born in Los Angeles, California, on March 18, 1979. While attending the exclusive Brentwood School, he founded his first band, Kara's Flowers, with classmates and friends Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Ryan Dusick. As high school seniors, the band published their debut album, The Fourth World, in 1997. Before disbanding, Kara's Flowers recorded one single, "Soap Disco," and appeared on an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210.

Levine and Carmichael departed Los Angeles for Long Island, New York, in order to attend Five Towns College, a school for music and the performing arts. Residing in New York introduced the duo to completely new music culture, with heavy doses of R&B and hip-hop; Levine would later claim that living in New York had a significant influence on his creative perspective.

Maroon 5

In 2000, Levine and Carmichael quit Five Towns and returned to Los Angeles. There, they reconnected with the remaining Kara's Flowers members and recruited guitarist James Valentine, while Carmichael switched to keyboards. In 2002, the group changed its name to Maroon 5 and released its debut album Songs About Jane. After steadily ascending the charts for two years with singles such as "Harder to Breathe," "This Love," and "She Will Be Loved," the album became platinum two years later. The accompanying music videos for the hits made Levine an instant sex icon.

In 2004, Maroon 5 won their first Grammy Award (Best New Artist). In 2005 and 2007, the band would be awarded the Grammy for Best Pop Performance.

It Won't Be Soon Before Long (2007) and Hands All Over (2010), the latter of which produced the mega single "Moves Like Jagger," were popular follow-ups to Songs About Jane. Levine also achieved popularity by appearing on the albums of other artists, including superstars Kanye West, Alicia Keys, and Natasha Bedingfield.

In 2012, Maroon 5 returned to the top of the charts with their fourth studio album, Overexposed, which included the singles "One More Night" and "Payphone" with Wiz Khalifa. Levine and his bandmates embarked on a world tour to promote the album. With the release of its following album, V, the band continued to experience enormous success (2014). The album included the popular singles "Maps" and "Animals."

2017 saw the release of Maroon 5's sixth studio album, Red Pill Blues, which included musicians such as ASAP Rocky, Julia Michaels, and SZA. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in the United States and spawned the number-one singles "What Lovers Do," "Wait," and "Girls Like You."

In February of 2019, Maroon 5 headlined the Super Bowl LIII halftime performance, which also included rappers Big Boi and Travis Scott.

Television Appearances & 'The Voice' Judge

In 2007, Adam Levine made his first foray into television with an appearance on Saturday Night Live. He also featured on A Night of Too Many Stars on Comedy Central and made a guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. In 2011, Levine transitioned to a full-time TV position as a judge/coach on the reality series The Voice, and the following year he secured a small role in the series American Horror Story.

Levine began his fourth season on The Voice in 2013, with Blake Shelton and newcomers Shakira and Usher, who replaced Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green as judges. In the same year, Levine released his first fragrance collection, which includes both men's and women's items. In addition, he inked a contract with NBC to help create new shows and specials for the network.

Following sixteen seasons on the renowned singing competition, Levine's tenure on The Voice concluded in May 2019. In a long Instagram message, he praised his fellow coaches, the show's crew, and viewers, stating that it was "time to move on."

Activism

Outside of singing and appearing on television, Adam Levine has committed his time to the promotion of several causes, including ADD/ADHD awareness, testicular cancer (for which he appeared naked for Cosmopolitan magazine), and gay rights.

People magazine ranked Levine the "Sexiest Man Alive" in November 2013. The presenter of The Voice, Carson Daly, made the news live on air. Levine claimed in a magazine interview that he practices yoga and spinning to maintain his energy and fitness.

Husband & Children

In 2010, Levine began dating model Anne Vyalitsyna after meeting her at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue release party. The couple divorced in May of 2012.

Levine popped the question to Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo in 2013. The pair wed in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on July 19, 2014. They received their first child, a baby girl called Dusty Rose, two years later. Their second daughter, Gio Grace, was born in 2018.
