Rules of Life for Living Happily and Successfully

Your everyday life is probably feeling stressful, and you feel discouraged and unhappy with life in general. Well, the good news is that you don’t have to give in to this dissatisfaction as a norm of life. The power to happiness and success is actually all in your mindset and in your hands.

We reached out to the best life and mental wellness experts, who have shared some inspirational advice and golden rules of life on how we can transform our lives to live happily and successfully.

Constantly Learning

“Constantly learning is a great rule to live by in your life, because it adds excitement, is gratifying, and helps you move forward in whatever you are doing. I am constantly learning about new things by reading, researching, exploring, and just doing things. If I am sitting still and not doing what I need to learn things, I feel as if I am wasting time. Learning new things can open up a new door that you never expected to find and will energize you to keep going even further. I truly believe that learning and growing are a major part of living a happy and successful life. You don’t need to know everything, but as long as you make the effort to learn, you’ll be moving forward, which is really the goal in life.”

Incorporate More Good News Into Your Life

“Good news bolsters health and wellbeing. The more positive information we take in, the better we feel, and people can rewire or retrain the brain by getting into the habit of consciously looking for the good in the world. I’ve felt for many years that the media report only on the negative side of life and that the other side needs more exposure. I choose to focus on the good for a simple reason: there’s far more good in the world and in people than there is bad. This is a fact, not a foolishly optimistic pipe dream. I’m not suggesting that we ignore bad news, nor should we diminish its significance. The pain and suffering it tells of are real, and we should do whatever we can to alleviate at least some of it. Most of us have the opportunity to help in some way, particularly in combating discrimination and supporting the poor. Empathy and kindness always help with healing. Yet our other challenge is to not let the bad news overwhelm us—to offer help where and when we can, but also to learn to balance our negative input by increasing our awareness of what’s good and right.”

Focus on ’Today’

“Happiness truly only exists today. It is a feeling that you define and redefine in the current moment, and you get to choose it and design it, predicated on decisions that align and enhance the intersection of what is most important to you and today. I believe that happiness and success are inside connections that you experience within yourself. When you genuinely feel happy and successful, it radiates from you, not the other way around. No one can “make you happy” or create success for you; only you can do that for yourself. So, staying clear on what you want, and why you want that, refocuses your boundaries and repurposes your commitment to what you can do today to get just a bit closer to your goals.

“When you create boundaries and rules that enable your use of the 24-hours you are living, you unlock gratitude and elevate the energy in a way that fuels wonder and opportunity. You cannot change yesterday, nor can you live in the overthink of tomorrow, so jump-starting success and joy begin with your commitment to being mindful of how you ‘use’ your day.

“One thing I like to do is to start each day by asking myself ‘How will I use today?’ The answers that I give myself form the guidelines for the actions or in-actions I take throughout my day. At the end of the day, I like to recap and ask myself ‘How did I use today?’ This small check in puts me in charge of the cycle of events in my life and holds me accountable to being mindful of both my wins and my ability to reinforce and to celebrate them.”

“Practice Gratitude in Three Ways:

Become a Tourist in Your Own Hometown

“Stop and notice great things that are in your life that you may take for granted.

 Don’t Compare, Ever!

“Don't compare yourself to others; if you’re a mom, do not compare yourself to other moms, don’t compare your current life to your past life.

Thank People As Often As You Are Able

“And do it genuinely. Thank people in your life that you work with, who you talk to, and say to them, ‘I am thankful for you’.”

Don’t Allow Anxiety to Overtake, Focus on What You Can Do Today

“When we are feeling anxious, we tend to allow our mind to relive the causes of our anxiety again and again. It keeps us up at night. No matter what the stresses and anxieties are in your life, deliberately, purposefully aim your focus away from them. When you find yourself drifting into useless worry or questioning, take charge and do your best to problem-solve. Be a MacGyver; get intrigued by what you can accomplish with what's at hand, here and now, rather than sweating over what you can't. You'll be amazed at how focusing on what can be done, instead of what can't, will bring you a better, more hopeful outlook and a more successful outcome.

“The same can be said when it comes to our body. Pay attention to the physical manifestations of anxiety or stress. Don't overeat or overdrink. Don't let the refrigerator or the drinks cabinet be your go-to. Create and stick with a healthy routine. Stress is much better alleviated with exercise, or reading, or some kind of productive work than with munching your way through the day.

“Get rid of your anxious thoughts before you turn the lights out: toss them into an imaginary wastebasket. Instead, write down a list of everything you were grateful for that day, and let those be the thoughts you carry with you into slumber.”

Noelle Nelson, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and author of over a dozen books, including ‘I Survived COVID-19, What Now?! Finding Happiness and Success in a Post COVID World’.

“Here are three useful strategies for experiencing a successful, happy life.

Get To Know Yourself Intimately

If there is anyone that we need to know all about, it’s ourselves. Many spend their time analyzing others while totally neglecting self-introspection. We are complicated, complex beings. Learning the intricate details of self will take lots of time and practice. Yet, in the end, the journey of self-discovery is immensely gratifying. Knowing our identity and purpose will automatically generate success and happiness in our lives.”

Create Your Own Definition Of Success

“What is success? If we asked 100 people this question, more than likely, we would receive 100 different answers. One mistake we sometimes make is utilizing someone else’s standard for success on ourselves. This is counterproductive. We must personally decide what the image of success looks like for ourselves. Is it based on earning a certain income, getting married, achieving personal goals, becoming a parent, creating a business, etc.? Once we have clarity concerning our markers for success, it will become easier to plot our course for obtaining it.”

Avoid Depending On Others For Your Happiness

“I always teach people that our happiness is solely in our hands. It is imperative that we take ownership of our personal space and emotional state. Relying on others for our gladness will create a dangerous dependency due to possible inconsistency because people’s temperaments change often. One day they can be happy and joyous, and the next day they can be mad and irritated.

“Additionally, we must be mindful of who we allow to get close to us. Everyone possesses a certain energy. If we are aware that some people are angry, depressed, and negative, to protect our joy, we will have to either avoid or limit our interaction with these individuals.”

Damon Nailer, is a consultant, motivational speaker, author, and educator. CEO of Kitril; Living, Loving, Leading: Home.

“Everyone wants to have happiness and success in their lives. Having these may be the ultimate life goal we should aspire to have. The rules to having a life that is happy and successful are simple, and here are some of them:

Surround Yourself With People Who Love Seeing You Grow

“Choose friends and family that would help you on your journey to success. Set aside those who are jealous and insecure of your growth. Having a support system like this will motivate you to go the extra mile when striving for your goals.” (Isla Duncan)

Find Something Positive Every Day

“There's always something good every day, even if it was a bad day. When you open your eyes and mind to the little things, you'll find that there is always something to be thankful for every day.” (Isla Duncan)

Take Time Out Of Your Schedule For Your Hobbies

“Ever painted or played chess when you were a kid? Do you remember how it felt like to do what made you happy, even for a little while? As adults, we may forget to allot some time to do other things besides work and household errands. It helps relax our minds and bodies when we do what makes us happy, even if they aren't necessarily important. Sometimes, all it takes for us to live a happy life is to find the right motivation to do so.”
