3 Activities You Need To Try When Visiting Michigan

There are many things that make the state of Michigan a popular travel destination for tourists, including its nature, lakes, and casinos.

When it comes to visiting Michigan, there is no shortage of compelling activities, tourist attractions and entertainment shows (namely sporting events, concerts) that’ll help maximize the fun value in your trip.

Here is a look at three activities that’ll make your trip to Michigan that much greater.

Casinos

Online sports betting went live in The Wolverine State in Jan. 2021. Before it launched, Michigan residents were only allowed to place in-person bets across the state’s casinos.

The MGM casino offers a gorgeous Lounge which is located at the MGM Grand Detroit in Motor City. BetMGM casino is also currently offering new customers a welcome bonus of $1,000 and $25 in free play.

There is a long list of popular luxury casinos across Michigan, including the Four Winds Casinos in New Buffalo, the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mount Pleasant, and the Lac Vieux Desert Resort Casino in Watersmeet, among many others.

You don’t have to be a sports fanatic to enjoy in-person betting in the state of Michigan. There are 26 different casinos across the state, so chances are a casino is right in your area, wherever you are in Michigan.

Sporting Events & Venues

The state of Michigan is a prime vacation spot for sports fans of all sports.

Detroit has a franchise in each of the “big four” North American professional sports leagues: The NHL’s Red Wings, NFL’s Lions, NBA’s Pistons, and MLB’s Tigers.

In the 2017-18 season, the Red Wings and Pistons both moved into the beautiful Little Caesars Arena. The Red Wings previously played their games at the iconic Joe Louis Arena, and the Pistons' home games were held at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills.

The Tigers play their home games at Comerica Park, which is right near the Little Caesars Arena. Since 2002, the Lions have played their home games at Ford Field, which replaced the historic Pontiac Silverdome.

Even though Motor City hasn’t had much sporting success to enjoy in recent years, Little Caesars Arena and Ford Field are always incredible atmospheres for sports fans. Of course, Michigan’s rich sports history goes well beyond professional teams.

The Michigan Wolverines’ NCAA football team plays their home games at Michigan Stadium, which is located in Ann Arbor.

It has a capacity of over 100,000, and The Big House is one of the top atmospheres for any sports franchise (college or professional) in America. The venue hosted the 2014 snow-filled NHL Winter Classic game between the Red Wings and Atlantic Division rival Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Wolverines’ rivals, the Michigan State Spartans, also play in a historic venue of their own — Spartan Stadium, which is located in East Lansing.

The Stadium will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of its opening in 2023, and it has a capacity of just over 75,000.

Even if you aren’t attending a sporting event in Michigan, getting a guided tour through several of the venues will at least be worth your time. There is so much history wrapped up in Michigan Stadium and Spartan Stadium.

Explore The State’s Many Beautiful Nature Spots

Michigan offers so many beautiful locations that are ideal for hikers, campers, and outdoor activity enthusiasts.

Mackinac Island on Lake Huron is one of the state’s most popular tourist attractions. For over 120 years, Mackinac Island has famously banned vehicles for general use. Its many beloved cafes, restaurants, museums, and historic sites are all within walking distance.

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is another must-see place for tourists in Michigan. It offers several gorgeous hiking trails and camping grounds. The Tahquamenon River and Porcupine Mountains State Park are among the top places to see during your visit to the Upper Peninsula.

There are many lakes that you have to check out if you visit Michigan. Four of the five “Great Lakes” — Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior — border the state.

You may want to check out other popular lakes including Torch Lake, Higgins Lake, Glen Lake, Elk Lake, and Muskegon Lake. Whether you want to swim or just enjoy the beautiful and inviting nature, Michigan really offers it all.
