98.7 The Peak :: Project Give

Have you ever traveled to another country? A place where you know absolutely no one, where everyone speaks the same language and it's not yours. Imagine temporarily saying goodbye to friends, family, and everything you know, to spend the next 5 weeks with a family you've never met, thousands of miles away. I've never been so lucky, but this year 33 high school students and 7 teachers from Tempe will get to do just that. Tempe Sister Cities is responsible for offering and arranging this amazing opportunity.

I've had the chance to meet some of the students in the past that have taken advantage of this program, and the one thing I saw in each of them was their commitment to give back to their community. Mariah Hoffman is a great example of that. She spent her summer in New Zealand in 2008. When she returned she took an internship with the Sister Cities International headquarters in Washington DC where she was responsible for organizing the annual Youth Leadership Conference. Students from around the world attended and had the opportunity to learn about various cultures, create empowering partnerships and develop leadership qualities.

To continue the services offered by Tempe Sister Cities, they are holding their annual Oktoberfest at Tempe Town Lake October 1^st - 3^rd. Proceeds from the event help fund the programs of the non-profit organization. Thousands of volunteers are needed to put the 3 day festival together and this is where you can help.
